As used in this report, “corporate education” is education offered by a business or industry for its own employees.HOW EXTENSIVE IS CORPORATE EDUCATION?Corporate education is an extensive, multifaceted endeavor, costing billions of dollars, educating millions of people, and absorbing many working hours annually.It is estimated, for example, that approximately $30 billion to $50 billion is spent on formal employee education and $180 billion on informal, on-the-job, education. Employees in companies with 500 or more employees–4.4 million people–can expect to receive frequent instruction paid for and provided by their employers.IS CORPORATE EDUCATION A THREAT TO HIGHER EDUCATION?As colleges and universities strive to respond to the needs of nontraditional students, they often find that corporate educators have preceded them. These efforts have accomplished two things. First, the structural conformity of noncollegiate instruction with collegiate instruction (for example, associating credit hours with contact hours) facilitates transfers and students mobility and opens up an array of potential cooperative efforts between businesses and colleges. Second, they have served as a major channel of communication between school and corporation about educational content and methods. This report presents the interaction between corporate education and these recognition processes, a path by which noncollegiate education can wend its way into the most traditional patterns of higher education. Innovations find their way into higher education in five ways, one of which is when external institutions appear on the scene to challenge, titillate, and/or draw attention to significant issues.The emergence of corporate education with its interest in formal recognition offers opportunities and challenges to higher education in the way it teaches, the students it seeks, and the perception of the purposes of education. The growth of corporate education is a stimulus to both internal collegiate debates and public policy decision making.WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED FROM THE PROLIFERATION OF CORPORATE EDUCATION?Many profitable educational ventures have been initiated that were provoked by employers recognition of their responsibility for developing their employees. Bevens said the names of those who want an air conditioner will be put on a list and one-room, window air conditioners will be distributed to them on a first-come, first-serve basis if they become available. Fans will go to those who dont get an air conditioner, Bevens said. City officials and their partners with Lets Help - the American Red Cross, Older Citizens Information and the Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging - announced last week they would give away the fans and air conditioners to eligible applicants on days hot weather forced the activation of Project Neighborhood Relief. That project was activated Wednesday and again Thursday . Also on those days, Bevens said, six of the citys community centers were designated as “cooling” centers and opened to the public beyond their normal hours.

The last time filings were lower was in 1985, when 4,433 filings were made, according to David Sime, clerk of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Utah. The decrease in filings has led some bankruptcy attorneys to close their doors or pursue other areas of the law. Jory Trease, a Salt Lake bankruptcy attorney, said the new law is having a drastic impact on bankruptcy attorneys. He estimates that at least half of all attorneys who were representing debtors have moved on to other areas.

This research project, undertaken by the Aboriginal Womens Health Research Committee with support from the Prairie Womens Health Centre of Excellence (PWHCE), seeks to extend our understanding of the positive impact of cultural identity on the wellness of Aboriginal women in Manitoba and the ways in which Aboriginal women have retained and drawn upon cultural values, teachings and knowledge in their efforts to heal themselves, their families, and their communities.What contributes to the health and well-being of Aboriginal women in Manitoba? And, what has influenced the identity of Aboriginal women? To answer these questions, this study used focus group discussions and interviews to explore cultural identity and wellness in the everyday life experiences and personal understandings of Aboriginal women. The study methodology was guided by principles that reflect the values and beliefs of local Aboriginal communities, including communality of knowledge and reciprocity, the acknowledgement of spiritual connections, relational accountability and holism. The focus group discussions and interviews were conducted in four Manitoba communities: a large urban centre, a First Nations community in Northern Manitoba, a small southern city, and a community relatively close to several First Nations in Northern Manitoba. The discussions examined several thematic areas, including (a) how women maintained their personal well-being, (b) how they maintained the wellness of their community and (c) how changes to the relationship between wellness and their community could occur. Women were asked: How do you practice well-being in your daily life? What are some ways that you try to be healthy? How is wellness a part of your community? What are some ways that you take care of the wellness of your community? What could your community do to strengthen Aboriginal women? What can we do as Aboriginal women to strengthen our communities?The Aboriginal women who participated in this research project took care of their health and wellness by attending to and maintaining balance between all aspects-physical, mental, emotional and spiritual-of their being. They envisioned their own identities and wellness in holistic terms. Women revealed identities that were inseparable from their connections to family, history, community, place and spirituality and were understood in the context of their whole lives. The sense of community identity was strong, rooted in their families, embracing friends, neighbours, peers, colleagues and people with shared experiences and interests, and extending to their individual First Nations groups. The importance of cultural identity was present throughout the focus group discussions and was a part of womens understandings of individual and community wellness.

BACKGROUND. The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the approaches of family physicians and obstetricians when evaluating and managing women with preterm contractions or labor.RESULTS. When asked their three most common treatment strategies for women with preterm labor, family physicians were more likely than obstetricians to select beta-agonists and hydration. Obstetricians were more likely to include magnesium sulfate and nifedipine in their treatment plans. For women with preterm contractions and no change in cervix, obstetricians were more likely to select either of the two short-term tocolytic therapies, while family physicians were more likely to select less aggressive therapy approaches. When adjusted for the facility in which they practiced and the number of years of experience, family physicians were nearly one half as likely as obstetricians to use tocolytics to treat women who had contractions but no cervical changes.CONCLUSIONS. In general, obstetricians were more likely to select more aggressive therapy for women with premature contractions without changes in cervix. Since it is unlikely that patient preferences would influence the choice of strategies for preterm labor, it is likely that these results reflect true differences in physician practice patterns based on physician specialty.KEY WORDS.
