The Best in Online News, Features, and Resources for Dentists of All Stripes DrBicuspid.com fills a huge gap in the market, said Ashok Shah, General Manager of AuntMinnie.com. Dental magazines have been around for years, but few have ventured online and truly taken advantage of the Web. DrBicuspid.com is totally Web-enabled, offering one-click access to the latest clinical, business, and professional information for dentists.
SAN FRANCISCO–(BW HealthWire)–Aug. 11, 1999– The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry recently announced that San Francisco based dentist, Dr. Jerry R. Bellen, has been awarded Accredited Member status in the Art and Science of Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. Bellens accomplishment was obtained through the demonstration of exceptional skill and judgement before a panel of accredited dentists from the United States. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry is the largest association of dentists specializing in Cosmetic Dentistry in the world.
Dr. Franklins selection is the result of a rigorous selection process that
includes an in depth look at the doctors collegiate and post-graduate
education, dental practice and overall integrity. In order to be selected,
they must have completed a minimum of 120 hours and three levels of
advanced clinical training from accredited post-graduate programs. “What
distinguishes our Mentors,” comments Garrett Caldwell, President of CCADS,
“is their comprehension and use of advanced clinical protocols for veneers
including all types of indirect all-ceramic and ceromer composite
restorations and their overall commitment to excellence in their
practices.”

Mentor-Instructors for CCADS have many responsibilities, including
conducting their own local study groups in their offices and instructing
nationally and internationally at seminars and live patient hands-on
programs. However, more important than their clinical duties is their
responsibility to the public and to any doctor who seeks assistance or
mentoring in the field of cosmetic dentistry.

Dr. Todd Franklin, DDS, has been providing beautiful smiles for people all
over Northern California. He graduated from the University of the Pacific
and the University of California San Francisco, School of Dentistry and has

Cancer PO Box 189, Gabriola Island, BC, Canada, V0R 1X0
Thousands of cancer sufferers are being denied life-saving drugs because of delays and bureaucracy in making them available on the NHS. The hold-ups are a matter of life and death for desperate people who have been diagnosed with cancer of the breast, colon or lung, or with a brain tumour. Doctors are furious that drugs such as Avastin, which is used to treat colon cancer, and Ce-tuximab, a treatment for head and neck cancers, are being blocked by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (Nice), a government-appointed quango set up to decide which drugs should be routinely prescribed on the NHS.

Symposium: Theoretical Basis and Effectiveness
Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.
Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Members will be asked to contribute ideas for a research agenda. The Cancer-Exercise Agenda: Opportunities in Applications Research

Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.

His fresh-scrubbed, slightly rounded choirboy appearance belies Henry Harpers get-it-done-yesterday delivery, his eagerness to tell his listeners everything about Med-stop–his system of franchised medical clinics–as fast as he can. Statistics pour out as he describes how an attempt to make money to help with his fathers medical bills grew into something far more. “I didnt know if I wanted to go into law, business or medicine,” Harper says. He took minors in chemistry, biology, music and business, and then settled on medical school. After graduation and an internship, he accepted a surgery fellowship at the University of Iowa. Midway through the fellowship, his father had a stroke.
Franchising Hiring is one of the most important–and difficult–jobs a manager has to do, especially as the legal system increasingly intrudes into personnel decisions. Employment service franchises that help relieve that pressure on management by taking over the hiring process for a fee are growing handsomely, along with the personnel placement industry as a whole.
Franchising The videocassette rental industry did not exist before 1978, when a company called Video Station opened a small store in California. Says Robert Moffett, who once worked for the company: The first year they had net profit of $98,000, so you knew there was franchise potential. The eight-year boom has been fueled by the runaway market for home video-cassette recorders, which enabled people to see movies when they wanted, in their own homes. Figures are hard to come by–as Byron W. Boothe, chairman of Popingo, Inc., Wichita, Kans., one of the larger video franchise chains, says, One of the things about a new industry is its hard to get your arms around statistics — but various industry estimates put the number of VCR households in the United States at 30 percent.

Growth in exposure prompts change in coverage provision Are your homeowners clients concerned about their exposure to personal injury claims? They should be, especially if they have adolescent children. In the Internet age, however, the potential for personal injury claims has increased substantially. Thanks to the global reach of e-mail, blogs, and shared sites such as MySpace and YouTube, damaging comments can be instantly transmitted to millions of people throughout the world and live on, so to speak, in electronic files that may never be fully expunged.
Taxation of Personal Injury Awards Recent legislation, as part of the Revenue Reconciliation Act of 1989, may have settled some of the other areas of disagreement. The legislation provides that the exclusion for personal injury awards does not apply to any punitive damages in connection with a case not involving physical injury or physical sickness.(1) Thus, it would appear that all damages, both compensatory and punitive received for physical injuries will be excluded from gross income. Only compensatory damages received for non-physical injuries will be excludable from gross income. Punitive damages received for non-physical injuries will be taxable. The new provision is effective for amounts received after July 10, 1989, in tax years ending after that date, unless a binding agreement, decree or award is in effect before then. Despite the clarifying legislation, areas for disagreement between taxpayers and the IRS still exist regarding the nature of non-physical injury awards involving libel or defamation of character. Lets examine the statutory provisions, administrative pronouncements and judicial interpretations affecting the taxation of awards for libel or defamation of character.

CancerCancer is, in general, more common in industrialized nations, but there has been a growth in cancer rates in developing countries, particularly as these nations adopt the diet and lifestyle habits of industrialized countries. Over one million people in the United States get cancer each year. Anyone can get cancer at any age; however, about 80 percent of all cancers occur in people over the age of fifty-five.Cancer can affect any site in the body. About one hundred human cancers are recognized. The four most common cancers in the United States are: lung, colon/rectum, breast, and prostate . This thesis will be tested on data pertaining to those Aberdeenshire turnpikes constructed before 1810 and will be considered from five standpoints: Aberdeenshire roads before 1796, the administration of the turnpike trusts, the topography of Aberdeenshire, local road construction practice, and the supervision of road construction. It will also be tested against relevant data published in the Edinburgh Encyclopaedia3 and the observations of contemporary writers.First it is necessary to establish the physical and theoretical criteria and the limits to be considered in argumentation. First, the roads to be considered all lay within the boundaries of the old county of Aberdeenshire as it existed before it became a part of the Grampian Region. Whilst concentrating on events in Aberdeenshire, reference will be made to road conditions and construction in the adjacent counties of Kincardineshire and Banffshire which formed the sparsely populated land mass of north-east Scotland. Second, the emphasis of this article, unlike some previous studies of turnpike roads,4 will be aimed primarily toward the engineering aspects of road construction, with the administration of road trusts being considered only where it impinged directly on engineering matters. Third, local road construction practices, established from archival sources, will be compared with those specified by Telford and McAdam, and with those used previously for the construction of roads in other areas of Britain.
OREM — Portions of Geneva Road and 800 North will be closed Monday through May 29 for construction, Utahs Department of Transportation announced Friday. Geneva Road will be restricted to one lane from 400 North to 1600 North in Orem while the road is being paved. The restriction will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday-Friday and on May 29. On-street parking will also be restricted during this time and motorists should expect moderate travel delays, UDOT advises.
A 30-year-old problem may soon be solved, but whether the state Legislature has to get involved has yet to be seen. State Rep. Donald Friske, R-Merrill, testified before the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources in Madison Wednesday regarding his bill, AB 163, which would create an exemption for certain wetlands for the construction of a road located in Tomahawk. “Its difficult for me to conceive any kind of opposition to the second road,” Friske said, pointing out that he grew up near the land being looked at for the second road during his childhood and would often use it as a shortcut to town during his teen-age years. The 2.3- acre stretch is also used as a snowmobile trail.

It is almost worthwhile getting “whiplash” preprinted on a claim form to save time Turning first to the real increase, the recently published report by the governments Statistical Service on Road Accidents in Great Britain in 1996 provides a clue. Injuries in 1996 totalled 317,000, which was an increase on the 307,000 in 1995. Fatalities, however, fell slightly to 3,598 from 3,621. Both figures had been generally falling since the mid 60s, when they peaked at just under 8,000 fatalities and just under 400,000 injuries. This has doubtless arisen for a whole number of reasons, including compulsory seat belts and crash helmets, drink drive regulations, air bags, better car design, and many others. To achieve this reduction over that period was particularly remarkable, because the vehicle population in the mid 60s was 13 million compared with slightly over 26 million now. Most of this increase in vehicle population can be found on the M25 each morning and evening!
In his preface he relates that the present work is intended to offer a background set of principles and to review state-of-the-art techniques of diagnosis and treatment in SCI care. The management of persons with SCI is outlined clearly in the first four chapters. Chapter 1, Principles of SCI, reviews anatomy of the spinal cord and briefly mentions problems and goals of care phases of SCI. Chapter 2, Acute Care, covers neurologic and orthopedic aspects of SCI and treatment approaches to minimize further injury and complications. Chapter 3, Rehabilitation, classifies impairments of sensation, motor function, micturition, defecation, sexual function, autonomic function, skin, and breathing. The management of these impairments, with the goal of minimizing disability, is outlined. Problems that might be faced in continuing care, such as posttraumatic syringomyelia, spasticity, and pain, are focused on in Chapter 4. The fifth and last chapter of this book, Participatory Planning, emphasizes involving the patient in goal setting and presents approaches for the planning process. The authors intended audience-physicians working with patients with SCI (particularly residents in neurology and rehabilitation medicine), physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, and others seeking a basic introduction to SCI-certainly will find this work useful. Other texts, including those listed in the references at the end of each chapter, would be better resources for more detailed information on the management of persons who have SCI. Physical therapy practitioners and other health care professionals would find the chapter on participatory planning particularly interesting and valuable.

Itook two day trips last week and guess what? I got slowed down by construction on the highways. Yes, I can hear you gasp. Construction? No way! Here is a true story. The trucks that deliver The Topeka Capital- Journal to points west of Topeka left the office one early morning last week and got caught in a traffic jam out by the Auburn Road exit. An accident had happened. The trucks were stuck for hours, unable to turn around.
Two-thirds of the 7-mile-long Hermit Road, west of Grand Canyon Village, is now closed to traffic, buses and pedestrians for major reconstruction. That closure, from Hopi Point westward, will continue through November 2008, and starting on July 7, the entire Hermit Road will be closed for construction. This $17 million reconstruction project will widen the road, improve the viewpoints and better define the walking trail. “People will be inconvenienced,” said Maureen Oltrogge, Grand Canyon spokeswoman.
First, snow is removed from the existing area far enough for two days of work. Then, dozers are used to rip up the frozen ground in small increments. Workers are careful not to rip open too much earth in case snow falls overnight and fills the holes with frost and moisture. The dozers then push fill material into the existing road and push frozen and dry material onto the road. The sheeps foot roller is then used to roll over the material to break up the frozen chunks of dirt and mix the dry and frozen material together. After a base course (the subbase layer of an asphalt roadway) is compacted, the grader is rolled over it to ensure that the road is even. The smooth-wheel roller is used to compact the top 4 to 6 inches of road. The next day, the top 2 inches of the road are final-graded, and 3 inches of well-graded #5 gravel are spread, graded, and compacted once more. While this is being done, other Soldiers grade and compact the ditches along the side and complete the finish work. This process may sound easy, but when the top 12 inches of road are frozen, it is not a simple task. The road that Task Force Eagle is working on is important to the local population for many reasons. First of all, it connects towns (over a 100-kilometer stretch) that were previously isolated from one another. This has significant economic impacts because these towns can now trade and export among each other. The road allows the small village governments to communicate and become a stronger government. The road also impacts education and health care because it is now easier to get to school or see a doctor when needed. But most importantly, Afghan local nationals are helping with the project by providing gravel, fuel, and water used in construction, which creates jobs for the local populace. In turn, the Afghan workers learn how to care and maintain the roads themselves, helping to make them autonomous once coalition forces leave the country.

have ever taken a vacation say they visit three or more Web sites when
researching and/or booking their vacation plans. “The fact that three out

romantic or relaxing, or objective criteria like price and internet
access and get relevant results. For instance, Kango users looking for a

Personal Injuries follows The Laws of Our Fathers, which Turow completed in 1996. His latest novel is set in the fictional Kindle County, which has much of the atmosphere and many attributes of Chicago, the city in which Turow and his wife practice law. The IRS has located a bank account into which large amounts of money have been deposited by those associated with a small law firm. The account appears to be a device to hide income, and the IRS immediately puts the pressure on Robbie Feaver, one of the two partners in the firm. The real problem for Feaver began when the IRS agents opened his front door to let in U.S. Attorney Stan Sennett, who had an entirely different goal than tax recovery on his mind. That is when George Mason got involved. Mason was an attorney who had an office in the same building where Feavers firm had its offices. Mason becomes the voice of the novel as Feavers attorney for the defense of the tax fraud charges. The story is told largely from his point of view as he attempts to help Feaver through what becomes a complicated hodgepodge of personal relationships, schemes, double-dealing, subterfuge and, ultimately, death. It seems the U.S. Attorney is interested in leveraging the potential tax charges against Feaver to force Feavers cooperation in a sting operation. The target of the sting is Feavers law partners uncle, the chief judge of the local court. U.S. Attorney Sennett believes there is widespread corruption in the courts. Feaver confirms that he has been involved in a system by which he can influence the outcome of cases favorably. The system involves giving money to various people who work for different judges, and the belief is that some of the money in each case makes its way to the chief judge.
In a personal injury action, defendant sought a partial summary judgment in Fellenz v. Luedtke Engineering Co. U.S. Magistrate Judge Jonathan W. Feldman denied the motion due to the fact that New York case law is not clear on applying Labor Law Section 241(6) to the type of work plaintiff was doing, nor is it clear that the observable danger would absolve defendant from liability under Section 200 of the Labor Law.Plaintiff Fellenz was employed by the Army Corps as the projects construction inspector and representative. His duties included observing the progress of the work, insuring that the break wall construction met specifications, completing quality assurance reports and plotting drawings. Fellenz was present on the construction site daily from June 1996 through May 1997.

FRANCHISINGHistorically, franchising was a grant by a king to allow a citizen an exclusive right to sell a product or render a service. For this right, the sovereign protected the exclusivity and the subject paid the government an appropriate tribute in service, food, goods, or money. Franchising in the United States started shortly after the Civil War (1861#x2013;1865), when the Singer Company began to set up sewing-machine franchises. The concept became increasingly popular after 1900 in the automobile industry. Because of this, other automotive franchises developed for gasoline, oil, and tires. In the 1950s, food operations made a dramatic entrance into franchising with the development of McDonalds, currently one of the worlds largest franchise organizations.Franchising operations account for billions of dollars in annual sales, with more than 500 outlets employing millions of people. A new franchise opens somewhere in the United States every six minutes. Franchising accounts for approximately 40 percent of all U.S. retail sales. Because of changes in the international marketplace, shifting employment options in the United States, the expanding U.S. economy, and corporate interest in more joint-venture activity, franchising will continue to increase rapidly.Franchising represents the small entrepreneurs best chance to compete with the giant companies that dominate the marketplace. Without franchising, thousands of businesspeople would never have had the opportunity to own their own businesses.
Scott Needham, president of Princeton Air Conditioning, has three divisions in his company, one of which is a franchise, LINC Services. Hes in a unique position to judge the merits of 100 percent complete ownership and making his own decisions as opposed to adhering to guidelines, regulations and regimens from a home office. “When I cut the royalty check every month I dont look at it as a cost, I look at it as an investment in my companys future,” Needham said.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

Q: I was involved in a car accident last night. I havent been to the doctor, although my neck is still very stiff I dont want to go to a solicitor. Can I sue for personal injury on my own? A: You can act for yourself in a personal injury action for less than L1000 in value. However, you must produce medical evidence to prove your case, so it is imperative you go to your GP immediately. You could also act for yourself if the injury was less than 1000 but it would not be treated as a small claim. Solicitors costs would be recoverable if you lost.

I thought this subject matter would make for a nice “interview.” The following is what I would say if asked for my thoughts on the current state of affairs in personal injury trends and what the future holds for chiropractic practitioners. A: I think that in order to understand the big picture, you need to parse out the contributions of the major players in this business, if I can call it that. The players are the insurers, the lawyers, the doctors, the various experts sometimes relied upon during the litigation process, the government and, most importantly, the victims of trauma. Q: Lets start with insurers - what are their contributions to the current personal injury environment?

Hagerstown businessman Scott Hoover went hunting in South Africa last September but he wasnt on vacation. Hoover is vice president, director of East Coast operations and part-owner of Outdoor Connection, Inc., so his African trip was really an inspection tour and just part of his job (although the photos do show him smiling as he holds the horns of his trophy kudu and gemsbok). Hoovers company can arrange anything from trout fishing in Montana or cougar hunting in Utah to caribou in Labrador or alligator hunts in Florida. The most popular trips, says Hoover, are fishing and hunting in Alaska, marlin fishing in Mexicos Sea of Cortez, and Ontario fishing camps on lakes so remote that they are only accessible by float planes. Although the emphasis is on hunting and fishing, some of the outfitters also offer white water rafting, summer pack trips and dude ranch experiences during their off-season. Outdoor Connection was created by a Minnesota businessman, Bob Laddusaw, who liked to go on hunting and fishing trips. After people began asking him to help plan their trips, he started Sportsmans Adventures in 1986. In two years, the business had grown too big for one location, so he renamed it Outdoor Connection and began franchising the concept.
